Except...there are no heart shapes here, just New York–based designer Emily Kuvin’s signature star motif, which is also known informally as “Kapow,” a reference to the sound of a punch as depicted in Marvel comics. It’s a compelling little celestial shape, fun and bonbon-like, and also a worthy symbol of self-empowerment.
So why is her new capsule collection titled Heart Sparkle? Featuring nine Stellas clad in red rubies, it’s a collaboration between Kuvin and Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health. From now until the end of February 2022, 15% of the proceeds from the retail sale of any jewels from the range will be donated to the institute’s Heart Smart program.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women in the United States and causes one in three deaths per year, according to the American Heart Association. Heart Smart is a cardiac prevention and wellness program based on the principles of the book Heart Smart for Women: Six S.T.E.P.S. in Six Weeks to Heart-Healthy Living, by Drs. Jennifer H. Mieres and Stacey E. Rosen. The program consists of six weekly sessions in a group setting and aims to support women in making positive lifestyle changes to reduce their risk for heart disease and to improve their quality of life—physically, mentally, and spiritually. Currently, the Heart Smart program is virtual and available to all.
“If we can raise even some awareness of the seriousness and prevalence of heart disease in women and raise funds to enhance the reach of the Heart Smart program, I would be thrilled [if] the Stella collection [could help] women stay healthier,” said Kuvin in a statement. (Kuvin is connected to Northwell through her husband, Jeffrey Kuvin, M.D., senior vice president of cardiology at Northwell Health.)
“Being knowledgeable about heart disease is not enough,” said Dr. Mieres, professor of cardiology and chief diversity and inclusion officer at Northwell Health, also via statement. “It is time for women to translate their knowledge into action. Health is one’s most important asset, and we are working diligently to address the health disparities among our communities.”
The Heart Smart program at the Katz Institute, Mieres says, is a “proven method to empower women to advocate for their own well-being and to be true partners with their physicians and health care providers. We also focus on issues and concerns specific to BIPOC women and help address risks and prevention in underserved communities.”
The Heart Sparkle capsule is shoppable now and will also coincide with American Heart Month and the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red for Women initiative, both taking place in February.
