Twitter made good on its plans to better support shopping on the app with the debut of its Live Shopping feature. The feature enables users to make in-platform purchases while watching a Live Shopping stream and have the ability to toggle back and forth between their Twitter feed (the Latest tab) and the event (the Shop tab).
Testing of the new feature happened on Sunday, when Walmart, the first retailer to kick off a Live Shopping event, debuted the first-ever shoppable Twitter livestream with a 30-minute variety show hosted by singer-songwriter Jason Derulo.
“Twitter continues to be an important platform for Walmart’s business and our customers,” said William White, chief marketing officer for Walmart, in a statement. “We’ve been focused on charting new territory in shoppable livestreams and are excited to celebrate an important milestone together with the first Livestream Shopping event on Twitter. We’re meeting customers where they are and making it easier to shop incredible deals and find inspiration through dynamic, interactive experiences. We look forward to continuing to bring engaging experiences to our customers that allow them to shop seamlessly while also being entertained.”
The event kicked off what’s known as Cyber Week, where many retailers offer deals online in advance of the holiday season.
Twitter also shared that it will be offering its Shop Module—a feature it began testing earlier this year that offers a dedicated space for businesses to showcase their products—to more U.S. merchants in the coming weeks.
In other social media shopping–related news, Instagram’s business team published tips on how to launch your products on the platform, capitalizing on the popularity of these events, otherwise known as drops, on its app. Showcasing features like its product launch tags and stickers and product detail pages, Instagram offers a sample time line for businesses to follow in advance of debuting their new goods for sale. You can read the full example here, and there’s plenty of time to launch your own products on your checkout-enabled account before the holidays.
