My 3-year-old has recently begun exploring her colors. Beyond the typical knowledge of red, yellow, and blue, it’s more, “What shade is this?” and it’s giving me a new appreciation for the range of colors we have at our disposal.
As we get older, it doesn’t really suit to say our favorite color is pink, does it? It’s either fuchsia or magenta, baby pink (remember Millennial Pink?), or rose. So when my daughter asked me, “Mama, what’s your favorite shade of green?” I was impressed—and rattled off hues like emerald, pine, and chartreuse, leaving one stumped-looking toddler in my view.
I guess we’ll be learning about all the many, many names of colors next.
In the meantime, I’ll show her this—a new ring from the Catena collection by Nadine Aysoy. It’s a fabulously luxe lesson in shades of green, with a geometry lesson added for good measure.

Styles like these demonstrate that just one color can be as exciting as an entire rainbow of them. Take a color like green, as this piece did, and create a gradient effect from light to dark (or vice versa) and marvel at the way one color can showcase more range than an EGOT winner.
