Welcome to October, the spookiest season of the year! Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the prime birthstone for October is the spookiest of them all, too.
Opal—ooooh, that’s an eerie one. Ranking right up there with black cats and cracked mirrors, the opal is linked with superstitions that are famously haunting. It’s wonderfully mysterious, a witch’s brew of colors trapped beneath a glittering, glimmering surface. It is beloved by designers and consumers alike, and it’s obvious why—few stones speak like opal does. Few stones inspire such fear too.
But we like that sort of thing this time of year, don’t we? An element of danger that’s so intoxicating we can’t help but seek it out, like a journey through a haunted house or a night of binge-watching slasher flicks. I’ve long expressed my wariness of opal, but that’s never stopped me from mooning over it. Like a forbidden treasure taunting me, opal is ever my temptress.
But opal can be just plain lovely and fun too. Today’s Britt’s Pick is the perfect example: a style that combines such a mesmerizing stone with an element of fun—and one that feels especially on-trend at the moment, too.
Have you noticed a rise in Western wear? Cowboy boots and fringe have piqued the interest of the internet’s fashion set, and this piece fits right in, with its stream of cable chains hanging from it. With its angular-set square of opal and dangling fringe, it has all the makings of a bolo tie, but of course it isn’t that at all.
The fringe is actually removable, which would make for a chic pendant, perfect for sleek evening styles or right at home in a layered neck party.
So sure, opal can be scary for the superstitious, and that’s okay! It’s all part of the great fun of October, if you ask me. But the only thing frightful about this style is that it’s one of a kind, so only one can get their hands on it.
