The era of the Zoom earring—and remote award shows—may be over, but Hollywood hasn’t quite gotten the memo. Earrings were the big winners at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 19, 2021. Earrings, the Apple TV+ charmer Ted Lasso, and the Netflix juggernaut The Crown.
Hannah Waddingham
We loved everything about the Ted Lasso supporting actress’ Emmy night appearance: her peachy-pink goddess-style Christian Siriano gown, her matching Anabela Chan earrings, and, of course, her bubbling-over-with-joy speech, complete with a shout-out to West End musical theater actors. (Waddingham is a fantastic stage actress; she’s done most of her work in London, but she did make a brief appearance on Broadway as the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot.)
Michaela Coel
Coel, the creator and star of the wrenching BBC/HBO limited series I May Destroy You, won big, first with her fashion and later with her speech (“I dedicate this story to every single survivor of sexual assault,” she said, accepting her trophy for writing I May Destroy You). In a two-piece neon yellow gown by Christopher John Rogers, Coel was radiant in drop earrings from British brand Alighieri and a dazzling diamond line necklace by Anne Sisteron.
Elizabeth Olsen
A nominee for the Disney+ series WandaVision, Elizabeth Olsen was a vision in an elegant white caftan-esque gown from the Row (the luxe label owned by her sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen), a trio of Chopard diamond rings, and a pair of completely showstopping Chopard diamond earrings.
Yara Shahidi
The Emmy presenter and star of ABC’s grown-ish knocked us out with her vintage-inspired Christian Dior kelly green ankle-length gown and Cartier jewelry.
Kerry Washington
On hand to present one of the evening’s supporting-actor awards, Washington—who also paid tribute to the late Michael K. Williams (a nominee for Lovecraft Country)—stunned in a custom Etro gown and De Beers diamonds, including rings, a bracelet, and earrings. Look closely and you’ll see the rough green diamond accents!
Kate Winslet
A winner for her decidedly deglammed turn in the HBO series Mare of Easttown, Winslet wore a very simple (some might say too simple) black gown from one of her go-tos, Armani Privé. Thankfully, she was a bit more daring with her jewelry, turning to Fred Leighton for ’20s and ’30s diamond and onyx Cartier and Fred Leighton bracelets, a midcentury Leighton diamond ring, and these drop-dead Hanut Singh drop earrings.
Awkwafina
We usually don’t love a matchy-matchy look, but sometimes it just works. Case in point: the poofy-sleeve Monique Lhuillier gown and perfectly coordinated earrings by Irene Neuwirth on the Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens actress.
Billy Porter
Children (as the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner likes to say)! You don’t have to stop at earrings—or ear cuffs, in this case! This is what happens when you add a necklace…and a bracelet and rings. Magic. Magic happens.
Angela Bassett
We know Bassett loves a big earring—especially a big ruby earring. These dazzlers are from Italian brand Gismondi 1754.
Allison Janney
Clearly the Mom actress got the pearl memo: How stunning are these Buccellati pearl and diamond earrings, especially with her white crepe Azzi & Osta ensemble and the shawl-style neckline?
Issa Rae
Who else wanted to go dancing after seeing the fabulous Fernando Jorge earrings on the Insecure star and executive producer? Perhaps that has something to do with their name.
America Ferrera
We always love a pop of turquoise—yet so rarely see it on the red carpet. (Why is that?) Presenter Ferrera looked summery and beautiful with Jennifer Meyer jewels—one-of-a-kind diamond and cabochon turquoise drop earrings and a matching pear-cut turquoise and diamond surround ring—and a Juan Carlos Obando slip dress.
