It’s easy being green when you top it with a bold Bulgari gold and gemstone bib necklace like Marisa ­Berenson did in this picture from Vogue’s September 1970 issue. “Bulgari represented all of Italian chic and was the height of elegance at the time. You felt luxurious in it,” says ­Berenson, who posed that day for photographer Gianni Turillazzi. The shoot’s theme was color—and ­Berenson was covered in it, from the canary yellow and tanzanite eye shadows that she applied herself (“We did all our own makeup in those days,” the model remembers) to the rubies, sapphires, diamonds, and emeralds resting below her clavicle. “There’s a kind of Renaissance splendor to be had in this look,” fawned the accompanying article. How apt: Not only were Bulgari’s pieces at the time inspired by the Italian Renaissance, but Berenson herself is a descendent of the Medicis!
