From last year’s Maya Brenner x Alli Webb to last month’s Stephanie Gottlieb x Joe’s Jeans, the best design collaborations are often the result of a cross-genre meeting of the minds. As I once noted in this article, success comes down to a thoughtfully blended creative undertaking, one that results in an end product that’s irresistibly novel—and casts a wide and diverse net, audience-wise.
Throw in an influential retailer to launch the collaboration and—voilà—you have a sure thing. The latest one to tick these boxes? The Suzanne Kalan x Jonathan Adler line of trinket trays that just landed on Net-a-Porter.
Crafted from porcelain and painted in a mixture of metallics and eye-popping colors, the trays are adorned with Kalan’s signature Fireworks motif—“scattered” baguette diamonds set just so—in an array of designs.
The collaboration marks the celebrated jewelry designer’s first foray into home decor. And as a leading lifestyle and home furnishings brand, Jonathan Adler, known for its bold geometric patterns and an appealing overall aesthetic that hovers between midcentury modern and glamorous Hollywood regency, was a dream partner.
Kalan was the one to propose the idea of a collaboration.
“I’ve always loved Jonathan Adler’s creations and over the years have built quite a collection both in my home and office,” Kalan said in the official announcement. “And Jonathan’s pieces work hand in hand with my designs. [Plus], I’ve been wanting to create a line of interiors for many years—aside from designing jewelry, interiors are my second great passion.”
In the same announcement, Adler noted, “I like to think of my products as jewelry for your home, so working with a jewelry designer as fabulous as Suzanne Kalan to create this custom tray was a total no-brainer. I hope people like it as much as I liked designing it with Suzanne.”
Kalan has plans to further develop her popular Fireworks collection in the world of interiors. For now, the trays are available on Net-a-Porter with additional retailers to be added in the coming months.
Below and up top, the small but mighty initial range. I personally can’t wait to see what’s next and hope it will be ready in time for holiday gifting!
