The strange thing about moonstone is that, while I will swear up and down that it’s one of my absolute favorite gemstones, I kind of forgot about it.
I suppose it’s easy to get distracted in a world of emerald, opal, sapphire, and spinel, but moonstone truly was one of my first favorites when I started at JCK 10 years ago (whoa!). I remember droning on and on about its magical mysticism and how incredibly gorgeous it was, and how ticked off I was that Rachel McAdams’ character in the film Midnight in Paris had the audacity to complain about them.
Most things haven’t changed; I still possess the innate ability to drone on and on (and on) about an element of jewelry that I love—and I still do, in fact, love moonstone. Ten years later, you won’t find most people wildly ranting about a Woody Allen film, but that’s another discussion altogether.
As we approach June, the month of this subject’s birthstone, I relish the opportunity to fall in love with moonstone all over again. Jewelry design truly has gotten better, and many of the designers that I began following all those years ago have grown in ways that are so amazing, with new offerings that continue to leave me totally slack-jawed. Add to this wealth of discoveries a whole new list of designers I’m only just encountering, and it’s pure paradise.
I swore I would obtain a moonstone jewel for myself the moment I first set foot on the show floor of JCK Las Vegas—I still haven’t. But, good things come to those who wait, and, based on this splendiferous spread, good things are in abundance, indeed.
