If it seems like we tell you that emeralds are hot every year, well…we do. “Humans have been fascinated by emeralds dating back to ancient times, when they were used as adornment but also cures for eye ailments,” says Hannah Becker, a GIA graduate gemologist and jewelry influencer perhaps better known as @diamondoodles. “The pure green to bluish-green color of emerald captures the beauty of the most lush and verdant nature in a way that is hard to replicate in other gemstones.” Yes, that beauty comes at a price, but remember: We’re talking about a gem that never goes out of style…and jewelry guaranteed to make anyone green with envy.

TEAL AND BLUE-GREEN SAPPHIRES
Apologies to Kate Middleton, but no one needs to see another dark blue sapphire engagement ring. Let’s lighten up a bit, shall we? “After the long and arduous year-plus of being isolated during the pandemic, it would not surprise me to see taste skew toward bold, bright, and exciting color as a method for infusing joy back into life,” says Becker. While we’re fans of almost any color sapphire (pink, orange, yellow), right now teal and blue-green are our—and many designers’—favorites. Bonus: They mix beautifully with fashion’s current go-to shade, the always refreshing mint.

PEACH
Remember when millennial pink was the new It color? Well, peach is the new pink. As for gemstones, think morganite, peach sapphire, peach tourmaline, padparadscha sapphire, peach moonstone—we’re talking about anything ranging from a watercolor-style pastel hue to a juicy pinky-peach to a warm, autumnal shade. When pressed to pick her favorite peach gem, Becker names the “underappreciated” imperial topaz, which she says “comes in every hue from golden honey to deep cherry red and all of the peachy pink colors in between.”

PANTONE 2021 COLORS OF THE YEAR
If you’re anything like us, when Pantone released its 2021 Colors of the Year—the cool, shadowy Ultimate Gray and the eye-poppingly optimistic Illuminating yellow—you reacted with a shrug. “As colors, neither of this year’s Pantone colors excite me,” agrees Becker, “but as gemstones I find them thrilling!” We’re listening. “Ultimate Gray when translated into moody, steely gray spinel or gray diamonds feels edgy and chic. Illuminating is the perfect example of the yellow hue in yellow beryl, aka heliodor.”
