Fine jewelry brand Coomi has debuted its first-ever retail store, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The brand was founded in 2002 by designer Coomi (who goes by one name) and has grown to include several non-jewelry categories, including gemstone-based sculpture and opulent one-of-a-kind handbags made from antique matte alligator and other rare materials.
We caught up with Estrella De La Flor, digital media manager for the brand, to chat about the new 2,000-square-foot space at 701 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale:
JCK: Hi! When did the store officially open? And were plans for the store already underway before the pandemic hit?
Estrella De La Flor: September 2020 we opened—we hope to host a grand opening once the pandemic passes. Yes, plans were already underway before COVID-19.
Did COVID-19 change any of your plans for the shop?
Absolutely. Our space was designed not only as a gallery but also as an event space. Due to COVID-19, we were not able to host events. We have almost no traditional showcases—everything is museum-style to give [the space] more of an open, airy feeling.
After 19 years in business, what made Coomi want to open a brick-and-mortar now?
To give clients the full brand experience so they can view Coomi sculptures, jewelry, and handbags all in one gallery. Coomi also designed the gallery.
What does the team love about having a store?
Being able to showcase items the way Coomi envisioned them, and redesign the store for every season.
What features or elements of the store do you like best?
Everything from the lamps to the sinks is for sale and all designed by Coomi.
What’s been the response to the space so far?
Excellent! Our customers have shown great support even through the pandemic, and [we] have received positive feedback from the Fort Lauderdale community. And it’s exciting to teach new clients about our brand. We are all very excited to see where this new journey will take us.
