If you’re already dreaming of summer, the new jewelry collection from Brazilian designer Vanda Jacintho will be calling your name.
Though Jacintho is not strictly a jeweler—her eponymous brand also boasts a line of swimwear and fashion apparel—the jewelry portion of her upcoming release is too fun not to celebrate.
What makes this particular new line for spring/summer 2021 so compelling is its birth. Jacintho worked with aboriginal South Americans from the Amazon to incorporate the straw crafted by the artisans, or palha de buriti.
“At this time, to talk just about fashion doesn’t seem enough,” said Jacintho in a statement. “I also want to support my hometown and the beautiful forgotten crafts of the aboriginals, which remind me of the nature that has always served as an inspiration. I used to believe there is a juxtaposition of modern art and nature, but in reality they are always intertwined. This period we are living in shows that we need both elements more than ever to create and move forward, to be connected to ourselves.”
Like many of us, Jacintho has been forced to bide her time in lockdown, taking the opportunity to turn her escapes—nature and the phenomenal Brazilian surroundings—into inspiration. The collection evokes the South American scenery with odes to its culture, and does some good, too: Proceeds will in part support a local charity working to combat the effects of deforestation.
The styles are vivid and bold, incorporating the aforementioned straw with staples of the designer’s previous collections, including wood and resin. Crystal elements are a new addition to the line, offering pops of color to play against the perfect summer tan. Each piece is made with recyclable materials in the most sustainable ways available to the brand, with many creations labeled zero-waste. The resin pieces are made by forming recycled, crushed resin into sculptural shapes, and some are painted with gold plating.
The selection of earrings is wonderfully dreamy, lending fantasies of dancing the night away under a sky filled with stars, each movable part swinging delightfully with the shake of a head. The necklaces are a maximalist’s dream, oversize and attention-grabbing. Actually, each piece is rather maximalist-minded—the major earrings are certainly no wallflowers.
The straw materials found in the jewelry also play a huge part in the resort fashions offered through the new collection: Capes, fringed dresses and skirts, and delicate sun hats abound. But the accessories are scene-stealers, and would be of particular interest to jewelers, especially for those with customers wanting something easy-breezy with which to welcome summer in a big, big way. If 2021 is the summer we all celebrate (either together or virtually, it should be done!), this is the kind of jewelry to do it in: fun, fancy-free, and, because it’s what so many consumers want these days, sustainably made and serving a community.
The new collection debuts in March, both direct-to-consumer and through the brand’s retailers, with more new pieces expected to follow.
