I am in complete awe of most bugs and insects. In theory, or from behind glass, I’ll marvel at them, appreciating their wonder and everything they do for the Earth. But put one anywhere near me in real life and forget it—I’m hightailing it out of there.
Jewelry featuring these winged (or multilegged) creatures is the safe, perhaps less frightening way to show your love for them, which is why I’m so often drawn to designs featuring their likenesses. It’s also around this time of year that we might start to miss the sight of them, our bodies aching for spring, the sunshine and the flowers that bloom with it.
With those flowers comes the busy bee, a sure sign that the weather is improving. Bees don’t want anything to do with the cold—a sentiment many of us can appreciate—so although I will literally scream (involuntarily!) if one buzzes my way, the sight of it is also somehow comforting.
Bees are also a wonderful icon to gift for Valentine’s Day. Though not as on-theme as a heart or red and pink gems, this maker of honey is a splendid ode to someone’s, well, honey, or for the mama that holds one’s heart—the queen bee.
Yearning for spring means welcoming even the creepiest of crawlies, if it means life returning to the outdoors, working and buzzing and helping things grow. Not that any of these jewels is particularly creepy—bug jewelry can be insanely sweet, as aptly demonstrated here. Not to mention the beauty of the butterfly, one of the most fitting winged insects to decorate jewelry probably ever. A harbinger of spring and summer, the butterfly goes hand in hand with the start of a new season, demonstrating how a metamorphosis takes place.
So, while we freeze through another couple of months, let’s look ahead to what’s to come—and share some springtime cheer with shoppers who are, like many, already thinking spring.
