Todd Pownell of Tap by Todd Pownell was named the 2014 recipient of the JA Mort Abelson New Designer of the Year award yesterday afternoon at the JA New York show. The Cleveland-based designer makes darkened silver, 18k gold, and largely inverted diamond pieces, all with a decidedly organic look and feel. According to his website, Pownell’s favortism of the “reverse setting captures the reflection of light in a succession of broad flashes,” while “oblique angles are illuminated and emit a feeling of twilight.” His work is carried in 18 stores and galleries nationwide, including Twist in Portland, Ore.
