It’s one of my favorite times of year—everything’s on sale, and the racks are full of summer steals that can masquerade as fall attire with a little thoughtful styling. Also, the occasional lightweight cashmere sweater or cool-weather jacket can turn up here, and that’s the big score—these pieces are good for the crisp mornings and evenings that are coming our way.
This year, the racks have been virtual for me, but below, I’ve managed to unearth some great transitional fashion to help prolong your summer jewelry joy for several more weeks. (My personal goal is to make coral and turquoise jewelry an all-seasons essential.)
The challenge was to curate looks that feel appropriate for the way we live now: We’re working remotely and very possibly juggling childcare or an online learning situation at the same time. We’re sleeping in the same outfits we cook dinner and run errands in. We’re meeting people for coffee or drinks at makeshift sidewalk cafés, and as the weather gets cooler, chic outerwear will become very important in such settings. And, of course, there will be masks. Lots of them.
Here are a few ideas to show you the possibilities.
STARS & STRIPES
It’s Labor Day for every day. Add layers and accessories when it starts to feel like fall.
SPLASH OF LIME
With Kermit-green jewels, you’re Zoom call ready in this top, even with (likely wrinkled) linen pants. No one has to know you’re wearing slippers under your desk or that you haven’t washed your hair in awhile—hence the turban.
MEET ME OUTSIDE
Firepits and heat lamps are in your future. You can wear the tank dress (OK, fine, it’s a nightgown) at home from morning till evening, then throw on the boots and jewelry when you go out. Drape the coat over your shoulders when the sun goes down.
Top: The necklace says, “Take me to the beach,” and the coat says, “One pumpkin spice latte, please.” Victoria Beckham belted coat, $298, theoutnet.com; Infinity necklace with lapis in 14k gold, $1,450, Elizabeth Moore.
