Earring styles of all kinds seem favorable at the moment, but one that is particularly prevalent is the threader. You know the kind—the one with an exaggerated hook that threads, as the name implies, through the lobe, hanging (typically) symmetrically with the dangler in front of the ear.
It’s a style that’s been around for quite a long time, but as a micro trend—if it had been a bug it would have jumped up and bit me—I completely missed the ship. It wasn’t until last week, when I posed the a question about what the future holds for current jewelry trends, that I received both comments and emails from retailers telling me the style has been popular. And I can understand why—they offer a bit of spunk in an otherwise low-maintenance style, lending that fun feeing of wearing a dangler (don’t you love the way long earrings feel when you toss your head back and forth?) without being heavy or too delicate to warrant removing them before a shower and so on.
I’ve noticed quite a few designers lending their takes on the style recently, so why it didn’t occur to me to recognize some sort of pattern is beyond me. But if shoppers are into this particular fashion right now, they’ve got some splendid options to choose from.
Some have a bit more structure, with a sculptural, more static wire—sort of an extension of the already-in-use french hook. They won’t exhibit as much movement as the styles that rely on a looser, stringier chain style, but they’ve got more volume and, in turn, feel a little less casual. Either is a fine choice and well-suited to our current penchant for living room loungewear.
And to answer my own question, yes, this current trend seems very sustainable, because it’s so versatile and available in a good variety (various styles would even do well worn together).
