If there were ever one perfect thing to symbolize spring (aside from a flower, of course) for me, it would have to be the kite. A harbinger of the incoming season, the kite is literally blown in using the wind—as winter’s cold air meets the new season’s warmth—as its motor. It thrives on the crossroads of our seasonal change.
Here in Washington, D.C., the annual kite festival, which coincides with our celebration of the cherry blossoms, often seems to fall on just the right day: not so warm you can’t be without a jacket, not so frigid you can’t stand to be outdoors. Wonderfully windy, as is necessary.
So it is that lovely jewelry decorated with kite-shape stones and patterns of all sorts is particularly eye-catching at the moment. Whether it be a gem that is truly cut into the silhouette of a kite—wider at the top, narrowing at the bottom, a four-point treasure gleaming with light—or more the general shape, say, a square-cut gem set on its corners or an elaborate design mimicking the object’s figure—this diamond-like style is arresting in myriad categories.
In an engagement ring, it feels fresh—I can picture a delicate half-carat stone, maximum sparkle, on a thin platinum band. In a pair of stud earrings, it plays well with other styles (Page Sargisson’s Kite earrings are delightfully mix-and-match-able). In a pendant, it has the look of a guiding star. And if you’re fortunate to get your hands on jewelry that takes its kite inspiration literally, what a beautifully whimsical find that shall be. As a pair of shoulder-dusting earrings or long, lavalier-style pendant, the kite, a childhood staple stirring nostalgia for the days of carefree fun, gets its proper, polished due.
