In what experts say could be the largest security breach in U.S. retail history, Target announced Dec. 19 it has discovered unauthorized access to 40 million of its customers’ credit and debit cards.
The cards were all used between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2013. The information affected by this breach includes the customer’s name, credit or debit card number, the card’s expiration date, and CVV (the three-digit security code).
Target says it is partnering with a third-party forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.
“We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice,” said Gregg Steinhafel, the company’s chairman, president, and chief executive, in a statement.
Target REDcard customers who suspect unauthorized activity are advised to call Target at 866-852-8680; other credit card customers are advised to call their banks. Further information is available at the company’s website.
