Apple has already made its mark on the phone and computer industries. Now, it may have its sights set on the watch business as well.
According to a report in The New York Times, “Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass, according to people familiar with the company’s explorations.”
The newspaper adds that the proposed watch would operate on Apple’s iOS platform, and be “based on the company’s understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body.”
The report quotes Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, as predicting that “wearable technology” could be the next trend.
“We believe technology could progress to a point where consumers have a tablet plus wearable computers, like watches or glasses, that enable simple things like voice calls, texting, quick searches, navigation,” he said.
In a blog post, former Apple designer Bruce Tognazzini says that an iWatch “will fill a gaping hole in the Apple ecosystem.”
“It will facilitate and coordinate not only the activities of all the other computers and devices we use, but a wide array of devices to come,” he predicts. “Like other breakthrough Apple products, its value will be underestimated at launch, then grow to have a profound impact on our lives and Apple’s fortunes.”
It should be noted that even if Apple does decide to get involved in the watch business, watch company TAG Heuer has already invaded Apple’s turf by introducing a smartphone.
