Maine state police are investigating a security breach in
Waterville-based Day’s Jewelers’ computer system that may have released
customer’s credit and debit information to third parties.

Jon Paradise, governmental and public affairs manager for
Maine Credit Union League, tells JCK
that the breach impacted customers that made purchases at Day’s in November and December.

“In the last week, customers have reported seeing purchases
from companies that they didn’t visit or they didn’t make, and the common
denominator is that they made purchases at Day’s around the holidays,” Paradise
says.

According to a press release from Day’s Jewelers, the
suspected breach involved hackers outside of the company. Day’s Jewelers
president Jeff Corey said the company’s initial investigation indicates
personal information was not accessed, and online customers were not affected
by the breach.

“We are working diligently with law enforcement as it
investigates this criminal activity,” Corey said in a statement.

The Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit is not releasing
details about the suspected breach because the investigation is ongoing.
