Apple is now the biggest watchmaker in the world, topping Rolex, Fossil, and Cartier, CEO Tim Cook announced at the Apple event held Sept. 12.
“Today, I’m thrilled to tell you the Apple Watch is now the number one watch in the world,” Cook declared.
Last year Cook described his smart timepiece as the world’s number two watch brand, just behind Rolex.
Of course, those claims are based on Apple’s own numbers. It has not released sales results for its watch (and Rolex is a private company). But it did say that last quarter’s Apple Watch sales had jumped 50 percent over the prior year.
Cook also announced the cellular-equipped Apple Watch 3, its first timepiece that can fulfill most of its functions—including making calls, receiving texts, and streaming music—without a smartphone nearby.
A survey by NPD Group, released yesterday, said 7 percent of consumers now wear smartwatches.
