De Beers wants to run live auctions in India, in addition to the online auctions it currently runs.
Last week, De Beers CEO Philippe Mellier said that De Beers may soon open a rough-diamond auction and sales office in Mumbai, once India establishes guidelines for duty-free zones, according to Livemint.
De Beers spokesperson Lynette Gould could provide no further details, saying only: “This is something that we’re looking into in discussions with the Indian government.”
The company currently sells 10 percent of its production via online auctions.
