Philip Minsky, the owner of Wyman Jewelers in Stoughton, Mass. and winner of the American Gem Society’s prestigious Robert M. Shipley Award, died on July 22.
While his age could not be verified at press time, a friend says he died on his 90th birthday.
Minsky, an affable man with a thick New England accent, was known for being active in industry associations. An online bio says he served as president of the AGS from 1989 to 1991 and was active in the Massachusetts-Rhode Island Jewelers of America and numerous other groups. He received the Shipley Award for outstanding service to AGS in 1984.
After he and his wife retired in 2004, he received another AGS honor: the title of “emeritus certified gemologist,” which is bestowed upon longtime CGs who have retired from the business.
“His contributions to the Society and to the jewelry industry were significant,” AGS executive director Ruth Batson wrote on Facebook. “Our hearts and prayers are with his family.”
